Identify the roof covering, component and applicable installation requirements before selecting a collated nail.

This table organizes an RFQ; it does not approve either family for a specific roof covering. Follow the applicable covering manufacturer’s requirements, and identify any proposed substitution before ordering. No generic roofing dimensions or performance claims are assumed.
Roofing describes the application, not one universal fastener
An enquiry for roofing nails needs the roof covering, substrate and installation method. Asphalt shingles, sheet materials, membranes and roofing accessories can have different fastening requirements. A large head or a familiar product name does not establish that a nail is suitable for all of them.
GAF’s published guidance distinguishes fasteners for different roof components and directs users to the applicable installation instructions. Use the covering manufacturer’s current instructions as the starting document. Record the product name and relevant specification, rather than taking a generic nail description as approval for an entire roof system.
Separate the two product families in the request
Coil roofing nails are supplied as a collated fastener package for a compatible roofing nailer. Their specification needs nail dimensions and head geometry as well as collation, coil format and tool details. The phrase big-head coil nail should trigger a head-diameter check, not an assumption that it fits every roofing tool.
Umbrella head roofing nails are a different family with a shaped head. An enquiry should identify the exact head profile, shank and any washer requirement, including whether components are supplied together. Do not treat an umbrella head nail as a replacement for a collated roofing nail solely because both appear under a roofing category.
Build the dimensions from the approved assembly
Provide the covering thickness, any intervening layers and the substrate material and thickness. Where the system instructions specify penetration, head size, fastener material or placement, send those requirements with the enquiry. Accessories and areas with different material build-ups may require separate line items rather than one length for the whole project.
GAF’s shingle guidance discusses penetration and the importance of correct driving position. Those requirements relate to its stated application and should not be transferred to an unrelated sheet-roof assembly. The purchaser should obtain the applicable covering instructions and approval before selecting a substitute fastener or changing its dimensions.
Resolve material and installation equipment together
Describe exposure conditions and the materials the fastener contacts. Specify the required metal or coating when known and request confirmation of the proposed grade, process and relevant documentation. Neither a silver surface nor the word galvanized is enough to describe every corrosion-related requirement.
For coil products, send the complete roofing-nailer model and accepted fastener specification. For umbrella head products, explain the installation method and provide a current sample or drawing. Request a roofing-specific drawing and confirm dimensions, supply options and suitability. A standard pallet coil-nail reference does not establish compatibility with a roof system.
Send a roof-system-specific enquiry
Ask for the proposed fastener drawing and a sample linked to that drawing. Keep the covering manufacturer’s requirements with the request so that any deviation is visible before an order is agreed.
