Start with the materials inside the ring
A hog-ring enquiry should explain what the ring must hold together after closing. A mattress spring connection, a fabric-to-wire attachment and a wire enclosure may present different material stacks and access conditions. An open-ring photograph alone cannot show the required completed connection.
Provide the dimensions of the wire, spring, fabric or other parts being captured. Include a sketch of their arrangement and a photograph of an acceptable finished connection if available. State whether movement is intended or whether the connection must retain a defined position. These details allow the open ring and the closing tool to be discussed together.
Use C17 and C24 as references, not complete specifications
The supplied catalog lists C-17 with a 17 mm crown, 9 mm height and 1.6 mm wire diameter. C-24 is listed with a 24 mm crown, 12 mm height and 1.8 mm wire diameter. Both use zinc-coated wire in the reference table. These values identify two distinct starting geometries; they do not establish an interchangeable tool fit.
The required closed geometry must be defined by the assembly and checked with the exact ring and closing tool. An open crown dimension alone cannot establish the finished inner diameter. Include an acceptable closed sample or joint drawing in your enquiry.
Match the ring to the exact closing tool
Bostitch’s original hog-ring selection presents ring families, dimensions and tool compatibility as separate information. That is a useful model for a buying request: specify the ring geometry and the full tool model together. A broad description such as C-ring gun or a similar-looking jaw is insufficient to establish an approved combination.
Ask the supplier to confirm the accepted ring type, wire size, collation and feed format for the proposed tool. For an existing line, include its identification plate and current consumable label. Follow the tool manufacturer’s instructions during sample checks; forcing a different ring into the magazine is not a compatibility test.
Define material, closure and packing acceptance
List the material grade or finish requirement and describe the environment. Silver appearance does not distinguish a particular zinc coating from stainless steel. If corrosion resistance or material compatibility matters, request evidence for the actual proposed material and finish rather than relying on a generic product image.
For the sample review, agree which completed-connection dimensions and visual conditions will be recorded. Include the ring reference, tooling, captured material stack and any purchaser-specified functional check. Also confirm strips per package and carton quantities. The source lists carton counts, but an order should specify the packing actually quoted and clarify whether reported carton weight is net or gross.
